Food Production

In 2009 we joined with Green Play Project to develop a mixed smallholding on rented land in North Somerset.

Starting with a bare field, we created vegetable beds, planted fruit trees and installed a 4.5 x 15m polytunnel.  Other areas were populated with free range pigs, chickens, ducks and guinea fowl.  Nearly all work was carried out by hand, with very little use of machinery.  The range of produce was extensive, including:

  • Summer veg such as tomatoes, aubergines, bell peppers, chillies, cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins, peas and beans
  • Fresh green leaves including rocket, spinach, chard, mizuna, pak choi and lettuce
  • Fruit such as raspberries, strawberries and melons
  • Root crops such as parsnips, carrots, beetroot and Jerusalem artichokes
  • Essentials like onions, garlic and potatoes
  • Meat products including roasting cuts, sausages, salamis and bacon
  • Free range eggs

This was such a positive experience that we decided to take it a step further and develop a small farm on land of our own.  We are now thrilled to be owners of agricultural land not far from the site of our original smallholding, from which we hope to produce lots of delicious, nutritious food for local people to enjoy.  For more info on our plans, go to the Pensford page.
